Same result, new captain: CSK ace Royal challenge once again

Mustafizur Rahman set the stage before Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube’s outstanding finishing abilities sealed the deal as the Chennai Super Kings defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru six wickets to one in today’s IPL opener. With no home losses against RCB since 2008, CSK maintained their impressive record.

A good batting track saw RCB restricted to 173/6, mostly thanks to Mustafizur’s best-ever IPL figures of 4/29 in four overs. The visitors were only spared by a 95-run sixth-wicket standoff off 50 balls between Anuj Rawat (48 off 25 balls) and Dinesh Karthik (38 not out off 26 balls).

Just when the run chase may have become more complicated, Jadeja (25 not out off 17 balls) used his expertise to his advantage, forcing a rusty Dube (34 not out off 28 balls) into completing some fast doubles to finish the chase in 18.4 overs. By the end, Dube became more and more confident in Jadeja’s company as he quickly completed the pursuit.

Rachin Ravindra (37 off 15 balls), who teed off well with three sixes and as many boundaries, deserves credit as well.

Complete command from the outset. We were in control after the spinners came on, but it took two or three overs here and there, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad said. “I’ve always found captaincy to be enjoyable.” I haven’t seen any increased pressure directly from the state,” he continued.

Brief scores: CSK: 176/4 in 18.4 overs (Ravindra 37, Dube 34*, Rahane 27; Green 2/27); RCB: 173/6 in 20 overs (Rawat 48, Karthik 38*; Rahman 4/29).
